Tracing Identity in Glass. Behind the Scenes of the EGS x Seguso Art Project
The clash between languages that seem worlds apart always draws us in. It sparks our curiosity and pushes us to tell a deeper story. That’s exactly what led us to follow the creation of an art project between a renowned contemporary artist and one of Italy’s oldest artistic traditions.
EGS is one of the most prominent figures in the contemporary Finnish art scene. An eclectic artist, he began painting at a very young age, driven by the urge to express himself in unauthorized public spaces. Today he works across multiple formats while staying true to the themes that matter to him. Whether through ink drawings, glass sculptures, or graffiti, his personal alphabet revolves around ideas of identity, place, and movement, intertwined with abstract forms.
He began creating three-dimensional glass works in 2015 and has since become one of the leading artists working in the medium. Spazio C21 – the contemporary art gallery and residency in Reggio Emilia dedicated to experimentation and research – invited him to develop a capsule collection in collaboration with Seguso Vetri d’Arte in Murano, one of the island’s oldest glassmaking ateliers, active since 1397.
That’s how we had the chance to reveal a glimpse behind the scenes of this project that bridges past and present. The capsule collection is on view at Villa Levi Terrachini and is part of the exhibition INVISIBLE IDENTITY, which also presents a selection of canvases and watercolors on paper at Spazio C21.
