Celebrating Cinema, Beyond Time and Space

Celebrating cinema together with others who love this art form, a form of freedom, and also of peace.

These words from the director of the Cineteca, Gian Luca Farinelli, close the final video of the 39th edition of Il Cinema Ritrovato. This year, 140,000 people filled the cinemas and streets of Bologna for a week of screenings of films from the past and conversations with great filmmakers.
These are special days that, since 2020, we’ve had the chance to document through the images and words of many special guests from different editions—Terry Gilliam, Martin Scorsese, John Landis, Paolo Sorrentino, Jane Campion, Wim Wenders, Luca Guadagnino, and Alice Rohrwacher, among others—but also through the faces and smiles of the audience that gathers each year in Piazza Maggiore to celebrate the magic of cinema as a collective ritual.
And speaking of magic, our thanks go to director Paolo Freschi and the team of young filmmakers who have been part of our house for years and without whom this story would never have come to life: Leonardo Barbieri, Nicolò Donati, Egidio Prudenzano, and Carlo Sgarzi.
While we await the next edition – the fortieth! – here you’ll find a selection of recaps from previous years, some of which were made together with students from the professional training course for Filmmakers by the Cineteca di Bologna.
