Envisioning News Sentiment

An experimental data visualization exploring the emotional landscape of world news. Inspired by Edward Tufte’s principles of data density and minimalism.

Feed: a real-time snapshot (march 2026) capturing the dominant emotional signatures of the latest global news events. Each card represents a single headline fetched directly from major international outlets (including The New York Times, Al Jazeera, and NPR), arranged chronologically. The vertical stripes correspond to the 10 sentiments, with opacity and width indicating the intensity of that sentiment in the article. Hover over a stripe for details.

Aggregate Sentiment: an overview of the dominant emotional tones across all analyzed news sources. The length and color intensity of each bar represent the average weight of the sentiment across the selected news cycle.

Methodology: each article is processed through a custom sentiment analysis algorithm that evaluates the text against a comprehensive emotional lexicon. The resulting scores (0-100) represent the confidence and intensity of each sentiment detected in the headline. Colors are assigned based on psychological color associations.
